"Paul knows people better than people know themselves."
–Bryce Boe, Staff Software Engineer, AppFolio
"Paul has an uncanny ability to read the room, even when the room is filled with an incredibly diverse group of people. If there's a shift in energy, Paul is on it."
–John Cutler, Product Evangelist, Amplitude
I am Paul Tevis, and as a coach and facilitator, I have more than a dozen years of experience in helping leaders foster effective change in their organizations, in both startups and Fortune 500 companies.
Since 2003, I have been fascinated by the notion that software is built by people, and the idea that the way people work together has a tremendous influence over the success or failure of their projects. As a software engineer, engineering manager, and coach, I have spearheaded Agile projects at both publicly- and privately-held companies, ranging from four-person co-located teams to 18-month-long efforts that spanned three continents. Along the way I have worked on technologies that range from compilers and debuggers for embedded systems, to motion controllers for industrial engineering, to SaaS workflow systems for residential and commercial property managers.
In addition to my technical leadership experience, I am a trained facilitator and professional coach, and since 2008 I have used both of these skill sets to help promote sustainable change in organizations. As a facilitator, I believe that teams are capable of solving their own problems, and that their usual patterns of interaction are what is holding their current behaviors in place. I have worked with groups from 2 to 120 at a time to find their own solutions to chronic issues. As an executive coach, I partner with leaders – from Directors to Senior VPs – to explore their challenges and find strategies for moving forward, particularly when their roles, responsibilities, or contexts have changed.
I love presenting at conferences, user groups and meetups. You can find about more about my recent and upcoming talks and workshops on my Speaking page.
I live in Santa Barbara, CA, where I co-founded the Santa Barbara Agile User Group in 2014. An enthusiast student of history as well as a homebrewer, I recently researched and recreated a medieval ale based on the 14th century records of St. Paul’s Cathedral Priory in London. I am currently leading a commedia dell’arte troupe: a group of actors recreating a 16th century Italian style of improv comedy.
I look forward to talking with about how we can work together to tackle your next challenge.
